Is Brow Lamination Right For You?

Beauty trends have changed over the years. In the 90's, the pencil-thin look was preferred, but today, fuller, tidy, and slicker brows are the in thing. But not everyone has natural full brows. That's where brow lamination was born.

But before you jump on the eyebrow lamination bandwagon, you should ask, "What is brow lamination?"

It's a chemical treatment process where brow specialists soften hair follicles and reshape or set them into a lifted, refined, and smoother shape. The brushed-up brows give the illusion of a fuller, defined, and uniform look.

What is the brow lamination process?

Eyebrow lamination involves applying a relaxing cream and setting a solution on the sparse brows. The chemicals allow the brow technician to brush brows upwards and set hairs in a new direction.

If you are receiving a full brow lamination, you can expect the following:

  • Our brow expert cleans the hair follicles using a cleaning solution

  • Lifting cream is added to the brows to break the bond between the hairs

  • Unruly Cover the unruly brows with plastic wrap to give the cream time to work

  • Wipe the cream and brush the brows upward

  • Apply fixing chemical solution to set brow hairs in a new direction

  • Add conditioner to the brows to moisturize

  • Wax and tweeze stray hairs

How long does brow lamination last?

Brow lamination treatment isn't a permanent solution. Full, lifted brows will last for 6 weeks. However, you can enjoy its benefits for up to eight weeks with optimal care.

The longevity of the brow lamination largely hinges on the aftercare you provide. Proper care includes avoiding moisture or steam for 24-48 hours and using brow serums or oils to nourish them. These practices will prolong the results and maintain the health of your brow hairs.

Other factors, like exposure to the sun or frequent swimming, can reduce the longevity of your laminated brows. That said, getting your brows re-laminated too often could damage your eyebrow hairs and the delicate skin around the eyes. Luckily, other brow treatments like brow shaping and tinting are still viable options.

Note: Everyone's hair reacts differently, with different growth cycles (usually 30 days) where old brow hair falls off and new hair grows. While some may retain the laminated look for eight weeks, others might notice it diminishing sooner.

Benefits of brow lamination

Brow lamination is a game-changer in the beauty industry, offering several distinctive advantages:

  • Quick and convenient: The eyebrow lamination process takes about 60 minutes or less, making it ideal for those with busy schedules.

  • Comfortable experience: Unlike some beauty procedures, brow lamination is typically non-invasive and painless, ensuring a comfortable experience for clients.

  • Natural enhancement: It amplifies the natural attributes of your brows, presenting a refined and authentic appearance without the artificial-looking results often associated with other treatments.

  • No needles involved: Brow lamination doesn't involve needles or puncturing the skin. As such, there's no risk of infection of the skin around your eyes or the eyelid.

  • Visibly fuller brows: After the treatment, expect brows that not only look more voluminous but also carry a fluffier, bolder, and thicker persona, breathing new life into your facial aesthetic.

The downside of brow lamination

Brow lamination has taken the beauty world by storm, offering a quick and effective way to achieve perfectly groomed, fuller looking eyebrows. While we love this treatment, it’s essential to be aware that, like any cosmetic procedure, brow lamination can come with side effects. Let’s explore some of the side effects associated with brow lamination and how to minimize them for a safe and satisfying experience.

Skin sensitivity and allergic reactions

One of the potential side effects of brow lamination is an allergic reaction for skin sensitivity. This can manifest as redness or itching around the brow area. If you have sensitive skin, always request a patch test.

Overprocessing and damage

Brow lamination requires chemical products to soften and reshape brow hairs. However, if left on for too long or performed too frequently, damage to hair can occur. Over processed brow hairs become weak, and easily break. To prevent this from happening, trust a skilled/licensed technician and avoid treatments too close. In my opinion brow lamination should be done 6 weeks apart.

Incompatibility with certain brow types

Brow lamination is not for everyone. People with sparse or extremely curly brow hairs may not achieve the desired results, as the treatment works best on brows with a moderate amount of hair.

Brow lamination can be a fantastic way to enhance your eyebrows and achieve a polished, put-together look. To minimize these risks, choose a skilled and experienced technician, follow aftercare instructions and consider your individual brow type.

Are there risks with brow lamination?

Skin irritation is one of the most prevalent side effects, especially for those with sensitive skin. Symptoms might include redness, itching, swelling, and occasional peeling. However, aftercare practices can significantly mitigate these minor irritations with proper brow lamination.

Given the risk involved, it's important to ensure you work with a certified and experienced brow artist. They will ensure they use high-quality products suitable for your skin type. A patch test before the procedure can be invaluable to ascertain any sensitivity or allergic reactions to the products being used.

You should also consider the chemical composition of the lamination products. Inquire about the ingredients, especially if you have a history of reacting to beauty products. Avoiding harsh chemicals and opting for formulations with milder, perhaps even vegan formulas, can be a step in the right direction.

Does brow lamination damage hair follicles?

Like hair perming, brow lamination risks damaging brow hair, especially if the procedure is performed too frequently or before the recommended 6-week gap between sessions. Continuous exposure to the chemicals used in the process can lead to dryness and weaken the brow hairs. Even worse, although rare, brow lamination can lead to eye damage.

Giving your brows enough time to recover after an operation is essential. Regular moisturization using brow serums and avoiding harsh products can help keep brow hair healthy and avoid making it weak or brittle.

What is the aftercare for laminated eyebrows?

Aftercare for your laminated brows includes not getting the brow area wet for 24 hours and avoiding contact with sunbeds, sunlight, steam rooms, saunas, and pools for 48 hours. You should also avoid touching and rubbing the brow area for 24 hours.

Because of this, you should avoid getting a facial before the elapse of 48 hours. Also, don't go swimming, shower, or indulge in strenuous activity that'll get you sweating.

After 24 hours, we recommend using a hydrating oil with vitamin E to hydrate the hair follicle. Keep in mind that some hair types dry more than others. Hydrating oils like argan, avocado, and castor oil should be used at night for at least seven weeks.

Finally, avoid microblading and medical-grade chemical peels for at least a month after brow lamination.

Can I wear makeup after brow lamination?

For the first 24 hours following your brow lamination, you should avoid makeup. This also includes brow gel, pencils, and powders. After this time, you can go back to your regular makeup routine.

Can I get a brow lamination and tint combo?

Of course. If you want meticulous and dramatic brows, you should get brow tint with your lamination. The chemicals used in brow lamination open hair cuticles, making the tinting procedure faster, richer, and long-lasting.
